The story behind Frederika

Frederika is my grandmother's name. And it also happens to be my mom's name and my second name.

My grandmother loved sewing and made the most beautiful clothes. I also started sewing about ten years ago, and it changed the way I look at clothes. There's something magical about turning a scrap of leftover fabric into something you actually want to wear.

And once you have made something yourself, you understand how much time, skill and care goes into even a simple garment. A jacket is never just a jacket.

With Frederika, I want to share some of that joy of making clothes. Choosing fabric, drafting patterns, constructing the garment and finally seeing something come together.

Maybe it inspires you to pick up a needle yourself. Or maybe it just makes you look twice at the clothes already in your closet, and appreciate the hands and hours behind them. Either way, that's what Frederika is about.

Jackets that make the outfit

I want to make jackets because I love jackets.

To me, a jacket is the piece that can change everything. It can make jeans feel dressed, a simple dress feel more interesting, or an everyday outfit feel like you made an effort, without trying too hard.

With Frederika, I want to create jackets with colour, shape and character. Pieces that move between work and everyday life, that you can wear to a meeting, to dinner, on a Friday night, or just because you feel like it.

The kind of jacket you reach for everywhere, again and again.

Because you can never be overdressed.

Making clothes more thoughtfully

I spent fifteen years in water management, designing water systems , doing fieldwork in exotic river beds and building software. It taught me that water is one of the most precious things we have.

Fashion happens to be one of the water-intensive industries. So I want to make beautiful jackets and be honest about how they are made: the fabrics, the factories and the people making the clothes.

I'm figuring it all out as I go, and writing about it every week in a newsletter. If you are interested? Please follow along.
